22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Landscape of HooDoo Warriors
As the darkening sky heralds the approaching storm, HooDoos line the PeekaBoo trail in Bryce Canyon national Park. HooDoos are formed over many thousands of years as the limestone erodes from wind and rain widening the natural cracks and faults in the sedimentary rock. The colours are laid down in strata as each period deposits various minerals on the lake bed only to be uplifted and carved into what we see today.
