22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
A group of Turkana against the background of the newly replenished lake

Following a gruelling and life-changing 7-year drought, nomadic tribes have turned static to access water. As the rains return, new generations conflict with older ones as they resist a return to the nomadic life. The people depicted here grew up as nomads but have spent the last 7 years near the town and are now reluctant to return to the harshness and uncertainty of the nomadic life.
