The only state-sponsored drag show in Cuba occurs every Saturday night at El Mejunje, a club and community space built in the ruins of an old hotel in Santa Clara. Glammed up to the fullest, these drag queens lip sync their hearts out to dramatic love songs, attracting crowds that fill up the entire space. Tips are encouraged, not required—but spectators do not hesitate to hand over some of their cash, even as the drag queens are actively performing.
