22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A complicated snack

Wild bees swarm over a Tayra (Eira barbara) to dissuade the large weasel from destroying their home which, in this case, is at the base of a gigantic bromeliad. Tayras are the largest of the weasel family, about the size of a medium-sized dog. They are omnivorous, but love wild bee honey. In fact, the name derives Tupi-Guarani, which means “honey eater”.
