22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A blow in the face!

This was a mother falcon protecting her young against a much larger pelican who came too close to the nest. Look how the falcon used both of her talons to attack - one had a firm grab on the top of the head and the other was deep into the eye socket and the pouch! The pelican’s opened pouch was so spectacular! You can see the throat of this giant bird. Apparently, the pouch had a previous injury, which added more stories to the life of these magnificent birds and the battel they had to go through to survive. Luckily it looked like the injury was healing. Hope the hole will close and seal soon. Wildlife don't have doctors. They have to rely on their own ability to recover.
