22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
A Bedouin man facing demolition of his home

I was in Mitzpe Ramon, working on a story about the Bedouins' struggle for land rights, I met Auda al-Zaidat, the patriarch and landlord of the village. He carries the weight of his family's history, rooted deeply in this land. His presence reflects resilience as he stands against the backdrop of the desert, a symbol of his people's enduring connection to the land they call home. The vast, arid landscape mirrors the struggle of a community fighting to preserve its identity amidst constant challenges.
