22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A Basket of Crayons

This one room Schoolhouse, was moved, after it was closed, to the Pierce County Fairgrounds in the Village of Ellsworth in 1959 where it stands today as a memorial to the County's rural schools. I shot this picture on the afternoon of August 9, 2024 during the Pierce County Fair when the Freier Schoolhouse, was opened for the public to view and stroll back to the olden days. I focused on a basket of crayons as the point of view with an apple and pencil sharpener as seen through the handle of the basket with portions of the American flag shown on both sides.I love the old school desks and wood stove also seen in this image, so reminiscent from when as a child in grade school, I attended a two room school similar to this in the small town where I grew up until a new school was built with modern conveniences. I treasure those past memories more so now that I am older and realize what a nice time to experience, when life was simple.
